This year's US Open took place during the week when Chelsea was in Virginia and our friend Caleb was here. We tried to avoid the entire Huntington Beach area during that time in general, because Caleb had sat in enough traffic already, thank you very much. He and Dan are also much more laid back, preferring an afternoon playing video games to the swarming streets and general chaos of a US Open day in HB. But Chelsea arrived at LAX Saturday night... and Chelsea likes the crowds and bustle along with me.. so off we went on Sunday for the last day of the event!
Due to our general Sunday morning laziness and the terrible traffic getting down to the beach (and let's not even talk about the parking situation,) we didn't make it downtown until after lunch. By the time we'd made it onto the crowded sand most things were packing up. We weren't able to situate ourselves where we could see the finals of the surfing competition, but we did enjoy wandering around and people watching from the event area and the pier. This year's event was much less crowded than 2013 because of the restrictions the city imposed after last year's riots. There were far less vendors and far more cops on horses. That part was kind of bizarre. And it was sooo hot. Our friend's husband owns a bar a block off the main drag, so we escaped the heat there with drinks and a blast of AC. It was a short afternoon but I'm glad we made it out, if only for the drinks!
